Is it better to go on a Cancun cruise in a catamaran or sailboat?

Catamarans and sailboats are different boats, each suitable for a luxurious and comfortable Cancun cruise but each boat type is also more suited for different types of adventures. Catamarans are generally preferred in Cancun, but lovers of more traditional sailing excursions will also find some sailboats.

Sailboats are single-hulled sailing vessels that are specially designed for cruising. They have all the necessary rooms to ensure comfortable sailing for several days, including sleeping cabins, bathrooms, a kitchen, a living area and, of course, storage space for luggage. On the deck, you will find the wheel(s) from which the boat is governed and in the bow you will find some space to relax. Sailboats, thanks to the wind, are also able to travel long distances without the need for fuel. On a cruise in a sailboat, you can feel the sea more and navigate to the rhythm of the waves. Although this provides a more authentic sailing experience, those who suffer from seasickness should beware!

The catamaran has a double-hull structure. This has some advantages for your boating holiday when compared to a sailboat. Firstly, the double hull provides more stability and guarantees more space on board. In the two hulls are the cabins and in the bridge, there is usually a seating area and the kitchen. Outside, on the deck, is the wheel or rudder, with a comfortable space for the skipper to sit. In the bow, there is usually also a solarium, with nets where you can lie down and watch the sea go by underneath. Thanks to its stability on the waves, you are also less likely to suffer from seasickness while on a cruise in a catamaran. However, sailing a catamaran in rough conditions requires special skill, so they are usually booked with a skipper. Keep in mind that by having a double hull you will also need double the space when mooring and this can increase the docking costs.

What experiences can you have during your cruise in a sailboat or catamaran?

When you set sail on a boating holiday, it is because you want to experience a pleasant, calm trip, with just a dash of adventure thrown in. Sailing through the Mexican Caribbean is always going to be a memorable experience, but to make it much more fun you will have the possibility of having some extras on board such as paddle surfboards, a stereo system and diving and snorkelling equipment. Here are some activities that you must try during your cruise in Cancun.

Firstly, it is always a treat to discover the landscape from the deck of your very own private boat charter. Wherever you're heading to, from the water you can zoom out from the shore for unique views of your destination. Depending on the location, a boat can also take you to points of interest that are inaccessible by land, such as beautiful bays, hidden coves or remote islands.

During your boat vacation, don't forget to stop off at some ancient Mayan ruins or in one of the colourful coastal towns to sample some delicious, local dishes. In the city of Cancun, you will definitely have the opportunity to party and let loose!

You could also take the opportunity to practice your favourite watersports or set sail for one of the nearby islands. Don't forget to use the dinghy to disembark if necessary! Take a refreshing dip in the clear, turquoise-blue waters and swim around the boat, or grab your snorkel or scuba gear to dive into the depths of a unique underwater universe. Kids especially love the inflatable donut.

When and where can you sail during a cruise in Cancun?

From December to April there is usually less rain in Cancun and the temperature is very pleasant, so we recommend you travel during these months. Hurricane season runs from September to October in Mexico, although they do not usually affect the Cancun area too much.

The Caribbean area of Cancun is not only known for its paradisiacal beaches but also for its Mayan ruins. You can start from Cancun, Quintana Roo. From there you can go to Isla Mujeres, one of the most famous and the closest islands. Ideal for snorkelling or even landing on dry land to see its cliffs and archaeological ruins, you are guaranteed an adventure on Isla Mujeres. Near the south of the island is the Underwater Museum of Art, where more than 440 sculptures are submerged in the Manchones exhibition area. From Isla Mujeres, you can go to Cozumel, an island situated in front of Playa del Carmen. If you decide to disembark, do not leave without visiting the archaeological site of San Gervasio. For those who were left wanting more, you should next head over to Isla Contoy. On this island, you can dive through caverns and underwater tunnels, which is, without a doubt, a unique experience! After this, you can go cruise the entire coast of Cancun passing through Tulum. When you return you can anchor at the beach of Puerto Morelos.

How much does a Cancun cruise in a sailboat or catamaran cost?

The cost of a boating holiday depends on several factors. Firstly, the price varies according to the type and size of the boat. Normally, a cruise in a catamaran will be more expensive. In addition to the boat itself, the sailing season and the duration of your cruise also influence the price. The season in which the reservation is made is very important, as booking in advance not only means that you can choose from a greater selection of boats but also allows you to take advantage of some fantastic discounts. Some boats can only be rented for weeks, an ideal duration for your nautical adventure. Fuel and moorings are not usually included but this depends on each owner and boat. You can book your week-long cruise in a catamaran in Cancun for €5,000, whereas a cruise in a sailboat will cost around €6,000. You must add the extras at the time of booking and then review the final price.

What are you waiting for? Plan your dream cruise in a catamaran or sailboat and enjoy a few days of vacation that you will want to repeat over and over again. Choose the desired destination and departure date on our platform to obtain updated information on prices and availability. Consult with the boat owner and our advisors who will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Generally a great sailing area all year around. Marinas are generally a little unorganized and power-supply is tricky most of the times. Marine Cartography is not the best once in shallow waters as sandbanks tend to move with the currents and storms. Be careful sailing by night as fishing-nets close tp shore have very improvised and almost invisible markings.
