Did you know that Var was among the sunniest departments of our country? Its capital Toulon wins the prize for the hottest city in France. So set sail for this dream destination for a vacation in the sun and by the water. Many other towns are also perfect for enjoying the beach and the sun: the beautiful Hyères, Bandol, Fréjus, Le Lavandou or even Sainte-Maxime.
The Var is a large department which offers many activities for the whole family: visits to vestiges, walks in small villages typical of the South of France or in forest, hiking or water activities, tanning on the beach. As an example, here are two possible routes departing from Grimaud:
1) After having contemplated Sainte-Maxime, head towards the island of But going up the coast. Please note, this island is private and you will not be able to stop there. This islet is famous for its tower which stands on this piece of rock. Renting a boat in the Var is surely the best way to get as close as possible to this island which is full of stories... Then, by continuing to Théoule-sur-Mer, you may even be able to see the massif of the 'Estérel.
2) You can also leave the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and if you feel like it, hoist the sails to the famous island of Porquerolles. Beforehand, we advise you to make a stopover at Port Cros, an essential part of your navigation in the Mediterranean. This island is accessible by shuttle from Hyères, but what greater luxury than being able to get there freely by boat?
- The port of Saint-Tropez: known to everyone, we come across racing sailboats as well as sumptuous yachts and small fishing boats. Cohabitation there is fluid and the infrastructure is of high quality, in particular thanks to the 40 people who work daily at the port to maintain its standard.
- The port of the island of Porquerolles: protected from the wind and the rare disturbances in the Mediterranean, this port has 689 berths . Once you arrive at the port, you can set foot on dry land on this island that is both close to the continent and cut off from the world. There are no cars in Porquerolles, so you can get around on foot or by bike.
- The port of Toulon: above all known for its impressive military arsenal, the port of Toulon is also a mecca for navigation with nearly 2 million visitors per year.
- The port of Sainte-Maxime: it has 800 berths including 5 reserved for fishermen's boats who sell their catch to wearing daily. Meet at dawn to see them return from the open sea with fresh fish!
If you prefer to stay inland, then you can visit the hilltop villages in Haut-Var, typical of the region. Finally, if the height and long steps don't scare you, the Esterel massif will be perfect for some hiking.
