Albufeira
Albufeira is one of the most sought-after, and liveliest, places on the Algarve coast, a Portuguese region renowned worldwide for the beauty of its beaches, the warmth of its people and its culture. It is also a perfect destination for renting a boat, as the region around it is full of beautiful beaches and fantastic weather for most of the year.
The charming old town has more than a hundred different restaurants and bars that offer a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere, sedimented in old Portuguese traditions and culture. Cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and traditional Portuguese cuisine, this part of town holds the cosiness of home.
But if you are looking for the city's nightlife, however, the ideal place would be the new part of town, much more modern and prepared to welcome the tourist industry with endless options for leisure and entertainment, such as nightclubs, modern restaurants, shops etc.
The Strip, the heart of the new part of town, is full of clubs and bars where you can party all night long. Surely a place for adult fun, this area, so quiet during the day, transforms at night to host the party, music, dancing and drinks typical of the region.
In the meantime, along the Albufeira coast you can find spectacular scenery, from paradisiacal beaches, to golden cliffs and hidden caves, and what better way to get to know all these little corners than by boat?
The whole family can have fun on a sailing through Albufeira and its surroundings. Ready to climb aboard your own boat for a day, or a week?
On the coast of the Algarve are many cosy coastal communities to visit on your next sailing, and we have a selection of them here:
The Algarve coast is without doubt one of the best places in the world to discover aboard a boat. Where the Mediterranean climate meets the beautiful waters of the Atlantic, this region is big enough to offer an endless diversity of beaches and coves, but small enough to get to know on your next family sailing adventure! Check out some of our favourite places below.
By heading west from Albufeira, you can reach Portimão in about 15 nautical miles. The town was historically a centre for fishing and shipbuilding, but today revolves more around tourism and leisure activities. Although the town, with its 56,000 inhabitants, is relatively large, it offers a more cosy and relaxed atmosphere compared to the tourist resorts in the region, as it is a town that has a large local population and relatively few tourists.
The town's restaurants and shops are therefore authentic and affordable as they cater mainly to locals. Spend a day getting to know the town and be sure to try the typical sardines of the region! Strolling through the cobbled streets, which house the old traders and markets is also a wonderful experience, as it allows us to get to know Portimão in total freedom and authenticity.
Spending a day at the beach is also a good idea, especially as Portimão holds some of the best waves in the region. For experienced divers, Portimão's coast is also home to the Ocean Revival Park, with the largest artificial coral reef in the world, formed by old Portuguese Navy shipwrecks. Here's a tip for you!
Another 8 nautical miles west, and we discover the historic and charming town of Lagos. The town's harbour is large, practical and equipped with all the essential facilities for your boat hire.
Lagos is also one of the most welcoming tourist destinations on the Algarve coast, offering a rich history and amazing scenery. Like many towns in the Algarve, its history is based on the fishing industry, as well as being one of the main departure points for ancient Portuguese navigations.
From the Praça Infante Dom Henrique and the Slave Market, to the Municipal Market, Lagos' historic centre is well worth a stroll.
As a tourist, there are a number of different activities to experience as the city offers picturesque beaches and a vibrant nightlife. Lagos' beaches, such as Praia da Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade, are among the most beautiful in the world, and it's not for nothing. Find crystal clear waters, clear sand and beautiful golden cliffs on your boat hire in Lagos.
If you choose to sail east from Albufeira, discover the paradise of Vilamoura, an exclusive resort with five different golf courses and a luxurious marina filled with shops, bars and restaurants.
Vilamoura is also unbeatable when it comes to beaches! Praia de Falésia is a 5 km long beach with golden sand, crystal clear, warm and calm waters. Then there is also Praia de Vilamoura which leads to the fishing port of Quarteira.
The Ria Formosa is not just an option, but a must during your boat trip along the Algarve coast. If you sail an extra 13 nautical miles, you will reach this natural paradise. Declared a Natural Park in 1987, the Ria Formosa holds an incredible biodiversity, from seabirds of the region, marshes, countless islands and beaches, lagoons, and the largest community of seahorses in the world. There is so much to see!
Beaches complete with services and hotel complexes are not common, instead what awaits us is rich wildlife, marshes and deserted islands. One of the islands, Culatra, also offers good places to anchor. In this small fishing community, time has stood still and the only means of transport to be found are a few 1950s-era tractors. The north side of the island is full of long, pristine beaches!
